Review: BISSELL Big Green Deep Cleaning Machine

BISSELL Big Green Deep Cleaning Machine When I heard about the BISSELL Big Green Deep Cleaning Machine, I was intrigued. After all, I have two very active kids, so keeping my carpets clean is a constant challenge. I’ve seen and heard about different steam and deep cleaning carpet cleaners before, but I didn’t know which ones truly would do the job. In fact, my friend Stephanie has a home steam cleaning carpet machine, but, according to her, it didn’t always clean as she had hoped.

Therefore, I jumped at the chance to test the BISSELL Big Green Deep Cleaning Machine in my home. For this complimentary in-home test, I received a BISSELL Big Green Deep Cleaning Machine with a hose attachment for upholstery, stairs and hard-to-reach places, plus a bottle of BISSELL Advanced Deep Cleaning Formula. After reading the instructions for use (which are quite simple and easy to follow), I set to work.

First, I prepared the machine for cleaning. This is a quick and easy process. You simply add hot tap water to the “clean water” reservoir followed by the appropriate amount of cleaning formula (see directions on bottle). After placing the “clean water” reservoir back on the machine, you install the “dirty water” reservoir above it and top it off with the locking “lid.” Now I was ready to clean.

Area rug_beforeMy first test targeted my living room area rug. Put in place when my 7-year-old was just a baby, it’s seen its share of spills, tracked-in dirt, spit-up and who knows what else. Though we spot-cleaned as needed through the years, we never have had the rug deep-cleaned until now. As you can see from the “Before” photo, the rug contained many spots and stains.

Now, the directions on the BISSELL Advanced Deep Cleaning Formula do recommend pre-treating set-in stains for the best results, but given that all my stains were set-in, I thought I’d just go ahead and see which ones were removed and which ones would require pre-treating in the future. As it turns out, most of them came out without pre-treating. Even those that remained were much lighter in nature and much harder to see if you didn’t know where to look.

Area rug_AfterThe directions call for you to run the machine over a patch of carpet while dispensing water and cleaning formula and then pull it back again, continuing in a back-and-forth motion until the soil and water are removed. I thought this would be difficult due to the weight of the machine and water tanks, but the machine actually moves relatively smoothly across the carpet. For some of the more set-in stains, I ran two or even three cleaning passes over the area, and sometimes it did remove them. However, there are still some spots that will require more pre-treating and cleaning before they come out completely.

BISSELL cleaning formulaDue to the nature of how the machine works, cleaning my area rug was a time-consuming process – approximately one hour – but I think the results were worth the time and effort I put in. I also cleaned the carpet in my daughter’s bedroom, which contained what looked like spilled chocolate milk and dirt stains. Despite the stains, the carpet is not in a high-traffic area like the living room rug, so it didn’t take as long to clean her carpet. And I was thrilled to see the stains gone from her floor!

Because you also remove the water from the carpet during the cleaning process, it didn’t take very long for my carpets to dry. However, drying time does vary based on how thick and high the carpet pile is, so keep that in mind when cleaning your own carpets.

Lowes BISSELL displayOverall, I was very pleased with the results I got from the BISSELL Big Green Deep Cleaning Machine, and I look forward to using it again to clean the carpets in the rest of my home. Next time, I can head to my local Lowe’s Home Improvement store to rent the BISSELL Big Green Deep Cleaning Machine and purchase another bottle of BISSELL Advanced Deep Cleaning Formula. BISSELL also offers Pet, Oxy and Allergen formulas to meet your specific needs. Rental prices vary, but my local Lowe’s charges $24.99 for 24 hours; prices for formula also vary, but ranged between $14.99 and $19.99 at my local store.

My friend Stephanie was so impressed with how my carpet looked, she went out and rented her own machine the next week. She loved the way her carpet looked when she was done, even more so than after a cleaning with her own home carpet cleaning machine. If you give the BISSELL Big Green Deep Cleaning Machine a try, I’d love to know your results, too!
